Wrinkle Relaxers

Botox and Dysport are two common wrinkle relaxers, also known as neurotoxins. Both products are used cosmetically to prevent and treat fine lines associated with repetitive muscle movement of the face. These medications work by blocking the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, thus preventing muscle movement at the neuromuscular junction. Both Botox and Dysport have a temporary effect. On average it takes 10-14 days for complete onset from the time of injection, with longevity ranging anywhere from 2-4 months.

It is important to recognize the difference in wrinkles when discussing treatment. Lines on the face are classified as static or active. Static lines are characterized as visible lines without movement of the face (these are often deeper set and more pronounced.) Active lines are only visible with facial expression. Preventative treatment is ideal, meaning best results are achieved on active wrinkles. Botox and Dysport help significantly reduce the appearance of static lines, but may not completely eliminate the line.
